Social Ills and Wills

In today's society, we are continually confronted with a myriad of social ills. From the prevalence of fatherless homes to widespread issues such as unemployment, poverty, broken marriages, abuse, addiction, truancy, bullying, and criminal breach of trust, these problems pervade our communities, schools, workplaces, and even our nation as a whole. Addressing these social ills is crucial as they have the potential to turn society backward and impose significant financial burdens on families and the nation.

The Root of Social Ills

Almost every social ill is directly or indirectly related to the absence of fathers in the home. This lack of parental guidance and support leads to various negative outcomes, affecting not only the immediate family but also the broader community. The Bible highlights the importance of addressing these issues:

Isaiah 1:17 (ESV): "Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause."

Isaiah 56:8 (ESV): "The Lord God who gathers the outcasts of Israel declares, 'I will gather yet others to him besides those already gathered.'"

John 10:16 (ESV): "And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd."

Addressing Social Ills with Compassion and Commitment

To effectively address social ills, we must exhibit compassion and commitment. The Bible provides clear guidance on how we should approach these issues:

  • Isaiah 58:6-7 (ESV): "Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?"
  • Isaiah 61:1 (ESV): "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound."
  • Psalm 147:2-3 (ESV): "The Lord builds up Jerusalem; He gathers the outcasts of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

These passages underscore the necessity of actively engaging with and supporting those in need. It involves not just addressing the symptoms but going deeper to tackle the root causes of social ills.

Social Wills: A Call to Action

There are three key social wills to combat social ills:

  1. The Will to Implement Preventive Policies:
Establishing proper and preventive policies in homes, schools, and workplaces is essential. These policies can help mitigate the factors that contribute to social ills and create a more supportive environment for individuals and families.

  2. The Will to Make an Impactful Difference:
We must take actionable steps to make a positive difference in our society. This involves doing what we can, while we can, to help those around us. Small acts of kindness and support can have a significant impact on the lives of others.

  3. The Will to Preserve Moral Standards:
Upholding moral standards is crucial for maintaining a just and compassionate society. Letting the fear of God guide our actions ensures that we act with integrity and righteousness, benefiting both individuals and the community as a whole.

Conclusion

The church has a vital role to play in addressing social ills. By rising up to reclaim our influence and voice in society, we can impact our communities with godly values, principles, and the Word of God. With God’s enablement, we can use what we have to rebuild and restore our society.

Matthew 6:9-13 (NKJV): "In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."

May the Lord help us to rise to the occasion, addressing the social ills of our time with compassion, commitment, and a steadfast dedication to His principles.
