In My Father’s House

As we begin this year’s journey, may our hearts and attitudes align with God’s will. A deeper, matured growth in our spiritual lives is necessary, and this comes from being influenced by the Word of God.
Luke 2:49 (ESV): "And He said to them, 'Why were you looking for Me? Did you not know that I must be in My Father’s house?'"
When Noah emerged from the ark, he built an altar to the Lord as an expression of gratitude and thanksgiving.
Genesis 8:20 (ESV): "Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar."
God appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who built altars as meeting places with Him.
Exodus 20:24 (ESV): "An altar of earth you shall make for Me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause My name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you."
The Tabernacle and Reverence
After the Israelites came out of Egypt, God gave Moses instructions to build the tabernacle, where the outer court, holy place, and most holy place were established.
Exodus 40:2, 38 (ESV): "On the first day of the first month you shall erect the tabernacle of the tent of meeting. ... For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night."
However, Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, disrespected God by offering strange fire, resulting in their deaths. This reminds us to treat God and His house with reverence.
Scripture and the House of the Lord
The Bible mentions the house of the Lord in various ways:
- Exodus 23:19: "House of the Lord your God."
- Judges 20:18: "House of God [bayith] in Bethel."
- 1 Samuel 1:3, 7, 24: "House of the Lord in Shiloh."
References to the temple of the Lord also emphasize its significance:
- 1 Samuel 3:3: "Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was."
- 2 Samuel 22:7: "From His temple He heard my voice."
Solomon took seven years to build the Lord’s house but 13 years to build his own. Let us prioritize building the Lord’s house over our own.
Christ’s Relationship with the Father’s House
In the New Testament, oikos refers to the house of God:
Matthew 12:4 (ESV): "[David] entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence."
Jesus cleansed the temple, declaring:
John 2:16 (ESV): "Take these things away; do not make My Father’s house a house of trade."
Christ was deeply in tune with the Father through the Word and prayer, enabling Him to overcome temptation. We are called to follow His example, drawing strength and guidance from our relationship with the Father.
We Are Living Stones
We have been born again and belong to our Father. Christ is building His church, with us as living stones:
Matthew 16:18 (ESV): "On this rock I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
1 Peter 2:5 (ESV): "You yourselves, like living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house."
Conclusion
Let us offer ourselves as living sacrifices to the Lord. Our Father’s house is a place of worship, relationship, stewardship, and discipleship. May we dedicate ourselves to His purposes and be transformed by His grace.
